Later, I took on the lock master's home at Kanaalweg Westzijde 7 in Veere, a Dutch maritime heritage building. Each project taught me that restoration isn't just about preserving the past—it's about creating a better future while honoring what came before.

But my biggest restoration challenge was yet to come.

In 2022, I found myself owning a dying 30-room boutique hotel on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Almonds & Corals had been built in 1993 as a pioneering eco-lodge, but decades of deferred maintenance and ineffective management had left it struggling to survive.

The reality was brutal:
